Courses are kept small to keep the learning experience intimate between professors and students. Clinical practicum can be completed either in the on-campus clinic or one of six approved mental health agencies in the area. Students will complete at least 500 supervised hours of clinical work that can go toward state licensure in therapy.
LMFT Licensure in Washington
Marriage and family therapists are licensed through the Washington State Department of Health. After gaining graduate-level education, there are two more years of clinical practice that is required and the passing of a national exam before applying for the license itself. At least a Master’s degree is needed to meet educational requirements, and those with a COAMFTE-accredited degree will meet specific coursework requirements and will already have a significant portion of their clinical training hours received.
Washington MFT Licensure Requirements
At least 3,000 total hours of work experience is needed, which includes hundreds of hours with direct supervision. The national exam is developed by the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulation Boards (AMFTRB) and must be passed. During the application process, there will be a criminal background check. In-state applicants will not need to have a fingerprint check.
