How to Become a Licensed Counselor in Washington
To practice as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Washington, candidates must complete graduate education, supervised clinical training, a national exam, and state licensure through the Washington State Department of Health.
1. Education
- Earn a master’s or doctoral degree in counseling or a related behavioral science from an accredited or Board-approved program.
- Coursework must include counseling theories, human development, ethics, group counseling, assessment, psychopathology, and a practicum or internship.
- Graduates of CACREP-accredited programs receive credit: 500 hours toward supervised experience and 50 hours toward supervision.
2. Supervised Experience
- Complete 3,000 hours of supervised postgraduate counseling experience, equivalent to at least three years of full-time practice.
- Of these hours, at least 1,200 hours must be direct client counseling.
- At least 100 hours must be immediate supervision with a qualified supervisor, including structured case review and feedback.
- Supervisors must meet Washington’s standards for approved clinical supervisors.
3. Examination
- Pass either the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Examination (NCMHCE).
- Exam scores must be sent directly from the testing organization to the Department of Health.
4. Application and Licensure
- Submit an application to the Washington State Department of Health with transcripts, verification of supervised experience, exam results, and the required fee.
- Out-of-state licensees may be granted a probationary license if their credentials are substantially equivalent, allowing them to practice while completing Washington-specific requirements.
5. Continuing Education
- LMHCs must complete 36 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years.
