Marriage and Family Therapist Degrees in District of Columbia
At this time, there are no programs that are currently accredited by the COAMFTE in the District of Columbia. However, there are numerous opportunities in the surrounding area to obtain higher education. In Maryland, the University of Maryland in College Park offers a Master's program that will meet the requirements set within Washington DC.
An alternative option is pursuing an online program, which a handful of them have been designated by the COAMFTE. Some of the available institutions to look into are Syracuse University based in New York, Capella University based in Minnesota, and Alliant International University in California.

Programs that have been designated by the COAMFTE showcases to prospective students their studies will prepare them to perform advanced therapy sessions with their clients and determine what is the cause for various issues leading to struggles within their relationships.
Universities must apply for accreditation and continue to uphold standards in frequent review. The curriculum will meet standards set by state licensing boards and ease the process in obtaining a licensure.
LMFT Licensure in District of Columbia
The location’s licensure process is completed through the Board of Marriage and Family Therapy. A Master’s degree or similar must be obtained by applicants, and that curriculum should have at least 60 credit hours worth of graduate coursework. Examples of course content should consist of foundational information, theory, assessment and intervention, preventative measures, and psychological issues. Completing clinical practicum in the program is also needed. All of this criteria is met by pursuing a program that has been accredited by the COAMFTE. A criminal background check is performed by the FBI for all applicants with fingerprinting done electronically.
When it comes to supervised practice, applicants must have at least 1,500 hours of clinical work. A 50-minute session does count toward a full hour. Supervisors during this time period must have be a licensed professional that is approved by the American Association for Marriage and Family Training (AAMFT) and will approve the clocked hours. There should be at least 300 hours of supervision, and half of those need to be on an individual basis. Applicants must complete the hourly requirement within five years of obtaining their degree.
