Appalachian State University Masters in MFT
The Master's degree for marriage and family therapy through the Department of Human Development and Psychological Counseling is a 48-credit hour program that is completed in a span of two years.

66 credit hours are needed to complete the program, along with at least 500 hours of direct clinical contact with patients. At least three semesters will be dedicated to clinical practicum experience.
Courses
Examples of programs within this curriculum include Advanced Human Growth and development, Human Sexuality and Contextual Sex Therapy, and Advanced Clinical Procedures and Special Populations. The program is open to both full-time and part-time students, but it must be completed within a five-year time frame, and clinical sessions can be held at one of the campus therapy centers.
LMFT Licensure in North Carolina
In order to obtain licensure as a marriage and family therapist in the state of North Carolina, applicants will need to have completed a 45 credit-hour program in social work or a related mental health discipline. Programs that have accreditation from COAMFTE will satisfy the state’s educational requirements for licensure.
Licensure Requirements
Another requirement is the passing of the national exam, and this is needed regardless of receiving licensure in another state. Depending on the license, either for LMFT or an associate, there must be a certain number of experience hours completed. For the LMFT, this is at least 1,500 hours that is documented, and 500 hours can be used through the educational process. Those that do not meet this requirement should apply for associate licensure.
