Mercer University Masters in Family Therapy
Students can pursue a Master's degree in Family Therapy at the Mercer Family Therapy Center, which is located at both Atlanta and Macon.
These programs will provide education in health evaluations and diagnosis, family support efforts, grief assistance, and substance abuse treatment solutions.
Coursework
48 credit hours are required to complete the program, which includes 13 courses that are taken on campus and six semesters worth of seminars that explore various topics in couples and family therapy, and there are clinical practicum sessions throughout. Valdosta State University MFT Masters
Obtaining a Master's degree within marriage and family therapy at Valdosta State can be accomplished in two years for full-time students, but can be extended for additional years if necessary.
Students will become multi-culturally competent, gain the ability to critically think about problematic situations within family relationships, and be able to determine what clinical methods are necessary when finding solutions. The curriculum includes two comprehensive exams that are created to be completed at the end of both years of enrollment.
Example courses in this 60-credit hour program include Family Systems Theories, Legal Issues in MFT, and Psychopathology and Pharmacology in MFT. Students will also complete 500 hours of direct client contact and 100 hours of supervision when working with supervisors.
University of Georgia DMFT Degree
The College of Family and Consumer Sciences offered a doctoral program in marriage and family therapy. This advanced degree will help students gain researching skills in the field, such as exploring quantitative and qualitative methods to observe how treatment methods are working when solving family disputes and relationship problems. Publishing this work as well as pursuing clinical work will also be part of the program.
For students that are looking at a more convenient method of gaining a higher education degree without going to a campus-based program can explore online opportunities that are accredited by COAMFTE. These are full degrees that will still meet the Georgia state educational requirements for obtaining a license in MFT.
LMFT Licensure in Georgia
There are numerous requirements needed in order to obtain licensure for marriage and family therapy. A Master’s degree must be completed either at a COAMFTE-accredited institution, or there is coursework completed in human development, and marriage and family studies and therapy.
At least 500 hours of clinical work must be completed within the education. After submitting an associate application, the applicant has the ability to take the national exam within one year.
The equivalent of three years worth of supervised practice is needed after graduation, but these hours can be completed over a span of five years and still receive credit for them. Many states in the area, like Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, have similar state requirements and will be endorsed by Georgia.
