Nearly all states automatically recognize these programs for their high academic standards in coursework and clinical practicum hours, satisfying the criteria they have set. In the state of South Dakota, there are no graduate programs available that are accredited by the COAMFTE.

For an on-campus experience, the nearby state of Minnesota has an MFT program, with Saint Mary's University of Minnesota. They provide a Master's degree in the MFT field that can be completed in a few years.

Those looking for a bit more flexibility, or unable to travel to an on-campus program may consider pursuing a degree online. Also based in Minnesota, Capella University offers a Master's degree that can be completed online. When looking at online programs, students should determine if there are any on-campus residencies that require traveling to the school for a certain amount of time, and if they meet the technical requirements to take the program.

LMFT Licensure in South Dakota

For licensure in marriage and family therapy in the state of South Dakota, students must have a graduate degree in the field and a curriculum including at least 48 credit hours of coursework. The practicum within the program should have at least 300 client contact hours.

MFT Licensure Requirements

Students that have taken a program that is accredited by the COAMFTE will satisfy these needs. In post-graduate clinical experience, students will need at least 1,700 hours of work recorded. At least 200 hours of supervision is also required, and half of that must be directly with an approved MFT professional. Passing of the national examination is also required, and unsuccessful attempts can be retried after six months.
