Seton Hall University MS in Marriage and Family Therapy
The Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy through the College of Education and Human Services is the exclusive graduate program that has been designated by the COAMFTE, and has also received accreditation from other organizations. 60 credit hours are needed to complete the program, in addition to at least 500 hours of direct clinical training and 100 hours of approved supervision.
MFT Courses
Example courses in the curriculum include Gender and Ethnicity in Families, Applied Research Methods and Statistical Analysis, and Foundations of Assessment and Treatment in Systems.
Students that do not have coursework within social psychology and biological behavior will need to take these prerequisites early in the program. There is an emphasis in understanding and working with multicultural patients to deliver the best treatment methods possible in all situations. Students should expect to complete the program within three years. Throughout enrollment between 2010 and 2017, there has been strong job placement rate (over 94 percent) and all students have passed the national exam for state licensure.
COAMFTE-Accredited Programs in New Jersey
Since there are limited opportunities to gain accredited higher education in the field of marriage and family therapy, students may want to consider looking at programs in neighboring states or fully online.
Iona College offers a program on-campus in Rochelle, New York, and is very close to residents in northern New Jersey. Syracuse University is much further away, but they have an online program that can be fully pursued from any location.
These COAMFTE-accredited Master’s degrees will still count toward educational requirements for state licensure. Students looking to pursue online education should review technical requirements needed. It is often recommended to have a modern computer with a Windows or Mac operating system and access to high-speed internet access for video streaming and downloading.
LMFT Licensure in New Jersey
In order to receive licensure for marriage and family therapy in the state of New Jersey, applicants must meet educational requirements such as obtaining a graduate-level degree that features coursework in foundational theory, clinical practice, family relations, professional identity, and research.
New Jersey MFT Licensure Requirements
Students that have completed a COAMFTE-accredited program will meet these requirements. At least three years of supervision is required in clinical practice, with at least two years directly in marriage and family therapy and the other year in counseling.
This equates to 4,500 total hours needed, and practicum experience with a graduate degree can be included. The supervisor must have at least five years of experience. A temporary license for those that have licensure in other states can be obtained for up to 10 days in certain situations.
