The Path to Licensure in Rhode Island

Step 2: Obtain Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (CMHC-A) License

Graduates must obtain the Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (CMHC-A) license before beginning supervised postgraduate clinical experience.

Requirements include:

  • Submission of an application to the Rhode Island Department of Health
  • Verification of qualifying graduate education
  • Compliance with Board requirements for associate licensure

Supervised experience may only be accrued after obtaining the CMHC-A license.

Step 3: Complete Supervised Clinical Experience

Applicants must pass a Board-approved examination.

Accepted examinations include:

  • National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Examination (NCMHCE), rather than the older National Counselor Examination (NCE exam)
  • Other Board-approved examinations
