Oklahoma licenses professional counselors through the Oklahoma State Board of Behavioral Health Licensure. The pathway begins with the Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate (LPC Candidate) credential, which allows graduates to practice counseling under supervision.

The Path to Licensure in Oklahoma

Step 1: Complete a Qualifying Master’s Degree

Applicants must complete a master’s degree in counseling or a closely related mental health field.

Educational requirements include:

  • Minimum 60 graduate semester hours
  • Degree program must meet coursework standards established by the Board

CACREP accreditation is not required, but the Board evaluates programs to determine whether coursework meets the required counseling curriculum.

Clinical training requirements include:

  • Minimum 100-hour practicum
  • Minimum 300-hour internship

Graduates must obtain the Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate credential in order to begin accruing supervised post-degree counseling experience.

Requirements include:

  • Application to the Oklahoma State Board of Behavioral Health Licensure
  • Criminal background check including fingerprinting
  • Submission and approval of a supervision agreement

Supervised counseling hours may only accrue after LPC Candidate status is granted and a supervision agreement is approved by the Board.
