Nebraska licenses counselors through a multi-level system administered by the Nebraska Board of Mental Health Practice within the Department of Health and Human Services. The pathway begins with the Provisionally Licensed Mental Health Practitioner (PLMHP) credential.
After completing supervised practice, individuals may qualify for Licensed Mental Health Practitioner (LMHP) licensure and, with additional requirements, advance to Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner (LIMHP) licensure. Nebraska requires 3,000 hours of supervised post-graduate counseling experience, including 1,500 hours of direct client contact, completed over at least two years. Applicants must also pass either the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE).
