Washington MFT Programs

There are five different institutions that provide MFT graduate-level education in the state of Washington, and these are all designated by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE).

With multiple locations in the state, this provides flexibility for students to gain their education and choose between bigger and smaller colleges, and those that have a religious influence.

All of these programs will offer a Master's degree to students upon completion, which satisfies the educational requirement for legislature in the state of Washington. Holding accreditation by COAMFTE ensures that students are receiving quality education from experienced faculty members.

MA in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine

Seattle University MA in Couples and Family Therapy

Offered by Master of Arts in Couples and Family Therapy is a robust program that requires 79 credit hours and is completed within three years. Their goal for students is to provide support for couples and family members through faith and research-based procedures while following moral and ethical values.

MFT Courses

Students will have exposure to diversity within patients during clinical sessions and will be able to create treatment plans to eliminate issues within their relationships. Clinical sessions begin in the second year of the program, which is spread out through the following 18 months.

An example of courses that are taken within the curriculum include Psychospiritual Development, Counseling Theory and Techniques, Systems of Trauma Treatment, and Psychopathology. Admission into the program requires at least a Bachelor's degree with a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

COAMFTE-Accredited Programs in Washington

Whitworth University MA in Marriage and Family Therapy

The Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy through the Counseling and Therapy department boasts a 64-credit curriculum that can be completed in nearly two years for full-time students. Part-time students will likely need three total years to complete the program.

Admission into the program takes place during the summer and applications are needed by the beginning of February.

MFT Courses

Classes are offered throughout the daytime and in late afternoon on campus. All clinical sessions are either at the therapy center on campus or are completed at approved locations. 13 total credits are reserved for the clinical practicum, while the rest of the curriculum goes toward core courses and specific marriage and family therapy courses. 100 percent of graduates have passed the national exam and found employment within the profession.

Pacific Lutheran University Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy

The Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy provides a thorough curriculum for students to gain the skills needed to work a variety of patients on communication struggles and addiction that has made an impact in their relationships.

Student groups have a wide range of diversity and social class backgrounds, along with different religion and spiritual beliefs.

MFT Courses

Courses are kept small to keep the learning experience intimate between professors and students. Clinical practicum can be completed either in the on-campus clinic or one of six approved mental health agencies in the area. Students will complete at least 500 supervised hours of clinical work that can go toward state licensure in therapy.

LMFT Licensure in Washington

Marriage and family therapists are licensed through the Washington State Department of Health. After gaining graduate-level education, there are two more years of clinical practice that is required and the passing of a national exam before applying for the license itself. At least a Master’s degree is needed to meet educational requirements, and those with a COAMFTE-accredited degree will meet specific coursework requirements and will already have a significant portion of their clinical training hours received.

Washington MFT Licensure Requirements

At least 3,000 total hours of work experience is needed, which includes hundreds of hours with direct supervision. The national exam is developed by the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulation Boards (AMFTRB) and must be passed. During the application process, there will be a criminal background check. In-state applicants will not need to have a fingerprint check.
