There are two different institutions that provide graduate-level education within MFT in the state of South Carolina. COAMFTE-Accredited Programs in South Carolina

EMERGE Family Therapy Center and Teaching Clinic, formerly known as WestGate Training and Consulting Network, offers a post-degree within marriage and family therapy, which is geared toward students that already hold a master's degree in the same field. Students that are able to join this program will have two chances to pass the national examination and three years to complete internship requirements.

Students that are looking for more flexibility in a Master's degree or looking at opportunities to pursue a PhD, there are a few options available. Some neighboring states offer a doctoral degree, such as East Carolina University in North Carolina. For those looking at an online education, there are only a few based in California - Loma Linda University and Northcentral University. Ensure that the online program selected is COAMFTE-accredited to meet various state licensure qualifications without the need to manually review.

Converse College Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy

The Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy requires 63 total credit hours to complete, including 15 credit hours reserved for the clinical practicum. Students that enroll full-time should be able to complete the degree in two years. There is an option for part-time students, but they must complete the program within a span of five years.

Most of the course availability is during the day, regardless of if the student decides to pursue this education at the Spartanburg campus or University Center of Greenville. Students have the ability to add a Play Therapy specialization. This focuses on coursework that will help practitioners utilize play when meeting with children in order to get them to communicate.

A handful of courses will explore theory, techniques, and application of these skills. Since the 2009 academic year, there has been a 97.8 percent national exam pass rate for students pursuing the degree full time.

LMFT Licensure in South Carolina

To gain licensure for a marriage and family therapist in the state of South Carolina, applicants will need to meet various criteria within education, practice hours, and examination. For the education portion, applicants must have at least a Master’s degree and a specialization within the field. The curriculum should have 48 credit hours of coursework, and typical topics include theory, family relations, legal and ethical issues, and research. Within clinical practice, there should be the study of psychopathology and psychopathology. The minimum amount of clinical practicum hours in the program are 300 direct client hours and 50 hours of supervision.

There is a possibility for candidates to receive a qualification for treatment of serious mental disorders, but this requires a special 600-hour internship. For the post-graduate supervision experience, at least 1,500 hours of clinical work is required. At least 1,350 hours of this will be geared toward client care, and 150 hours will require direct supervision from an approved LMFT or similar mental health professional. Application toward the licensure takes place once the candidate completes and passes the national exam.
