Kansas MFT Programs

There are a few opportunities in the state of Kansas to gain higher education toward MFT that is designated by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE).

Having this accreditation means these programs have been thoroughly reviewed in a multi-year process. All schools must apply for this accreditation and needs to be constantly renewed so it ensures the program continues to maintain high standards.

These programs can be found at Kansas State University in Manhattan and two Friends University campuses at Overland Park and Wichita.

Kansas State University MFT Masters

The School of Family Studies and Human Services offers a Master's degree in couple and family therapy. When taking this program, students will have the competency to perform statistical research and evidence-based therapy sessions with clients that are struggling in their personal relationships with loved ones.

They will also utilize ethical and professional conduct gained in their education. Courses are divided up into theoretical foundations, research methodology, assessment and treatment, and ethics and professional studies.

There are also 500 hours of clinical practicum sessions and 100 hours of supervision, and the program culminates with a thesis or clinical project and a comprehensive exam.

Friends University Masters in Family Therapy

The Master of Science in Family Therapy can be pursued at either the Kansas City or Wichita campuses, which are two of the largest areas in the state in terms of population and employment opportunity in this field.

Students completing this program will gain the skills needed to review and assess treatment needs, constantly evaluate patients' needs in order to determine improvement and what other therapy needs to be completed, and they will follow all ethical and legal standards.

Graduates that have completed this program have gone on to become child therapists, mental health clinicians, and trauma counselors.

LMFT Licensure in Kansas

Receiving state licensure for marriage and family therapy requires candidates to complete a Master’s degree from an accredited program, and COAMFTE does meet all state criteria.

MFT Licensure Requirements

Otherwise, the program should be within a related discipline (social work, psychology, counseling, etc.) and specific courses will need to be taken. This graduate program should have at least 500 hours of direct client contact and 100 hours of clinical supervision. The national examination can be registered for and completed after gaining the graduate degree.
