How to Become a Licensed Counselor in Oregon

In Oregon, counseling licensure is overseen by the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists (OBLPCT). The Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) pathway requires the following steps:

LPC Pathway

• Earn the qualifying graduate degree.
  A master’s (or doctorate) in counseling or a closely related field is required. Degrees may be from a CACREP/CORE-accredited program or a regionally accredited program that meets Oregon’s course and practicum standards. For degrees conferred on or after October 1, 2014, the program must total at least 60 semester or 90 quarter credits.
  
• Meet Oregon’s coursework & practicum minimums.
  Non-CACREP applicants must show credits across Oregon’s required core content areas, such as counseling theory, assessment/diagnosis, ethics, research, multicultural counseling, group counseling, career development, and human development. At least 280 direct client hours in a supervised practicum or internship are required.
  
• Register as a Professional Counselor Associate.
  Before accruing post-degree hours in Oregon, graduates must apply to become a Registered Associate with an approved supervision plan. Associates have up to five years to complete experience requirements and must use the title Professional Counselor Associate during this period.
  
• Complete supervised experience (post-degree).
  Oregon requires a minimum of 36 months of supervised clinical experience, including at least 1,900 hours of supervised direct client contact (up to 400 of which may come from graduate practicum/internship). Supervision must occur in the same month as client contact and must be scheduled at least twice per month:
