So, what does the personality of a successful social worker look like? The traits listed below represent those found in individuals who make ideal social workers:

  1. Empathy – The ability to understand the emotional crisis of another and relate to them accordingly represents the foundation of a good social worker.
  2. Patience – Many cases presented to social workers involve people and situations that change frequently. Patience becomes a necessity rather than just a virtue.
  3. Trustworthy – Social workers' clients need to know they can depend on the efforts and loyalty of their social worker.
  4. Organization – Social workers often find themselves with large caseloads. Staying organized helps them understand clients and present them with the most appropriate ideas and solutions.
  5. Communication and Listening Skills – An excellent social worker will listen to what their client says verbally and pay attention to body language. Just as importantly, you need to communicate in a manner that makes sense to the client.
  6. Objectivity – Staying objective while also demonstrating compassion represents a crucial balancing act, which is necessary to succeed after graduating from an online social work degree in Texas.
  7. Persistence – A social worker will most certainly run into hurdles. Tenacity and calmness help the case move forward, and it demonstrates to the client the social worker's ability to get things done.
  8. Flexibility – When dealing with people and their schedules, your schedule may not fit into a 9-to-5 workday. A successful social worker will need to accept an on-call status minimally for emergencies.
  9. Resilience – Social workers witness and deal with many difficult situations, such as illness, drug abuse, poverty, and domestic violence. The emotional strength to help clients overcome these obstacles while maintaining a healthy work/life balance represents another critical trait for success as a social worker.
  10. Motivation – To remain driven as a social worker, one must take pride in both small and large accomplishments. In addition to helping clients solve immediate problems, you're also paving the way for their self-sufficiency.

What do social workers do?

Succinctly put, social workers use appropriate resources to improve their clients’ lives. More specifically, Texas social workers may handle the following tasks:

  • Arrange adoptions
  • Assist in placing children in caring foster homes
  • Reunite families
  • Provide mental health support to children living with challenging circumstances such as a divorce or family tragedy
  • Assist with grief counseling
  • Help college students with the transition of living away from home
  • Counsel the elderly regarding aging issues
  • Provide financial guidance and assist with finding emergency resources
  • Assist with matters of domestic abuse

Of course, the list above doesn’t include all of a social worker’s responsibilities. The job of a successful social worker may seem overwhelming. Still, for the individual who genuinely cares for others, the rewards of an online social work degree in Texas outweigh the burdens.

Requirements to become a social worker with an online social work degree in Texas

The first step in pursuing a career in social work in the Lone Star State involves completing an online social work degree in Texas. The degree level will determine the type of positions you qualify for and, subsequently, the pay rate. The amount of time to complete the degrees below considers a full class load or a full-time student status.

  • Associates Degree or ASW – two years
  • Bachelor’s Degree or BSW – four years
  • Master’s Degree or MSW – an additional two years after the completion of the MSW
  • Doctorate Degree or DSW – a minimum of three additional years beyond the MSW

Upon completing a degree, the student must pass the associated exam administered by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB).

Path to social work licensure in Texas

All states in the U.S. require licensure for those social workers practicing in a clinical setting. Texas requires licensure for nonclinical settings as well. All social workers must complete a CSWI-accredited program, which may involve an online social work degree in Texas. The program must also include the required number of practicum or in-person hours for the particular program. Each degree or online social work degree in Texas requires the following additional credentials:

  • BSW – must apply for LBSW
  • MSW – must apply for LMSW or LMSW AP – Advanced Practicum
  • Specialty licensure credentials include:
  • C-ACYFSW – Certified Advanced Children, Youth, and Family Social Worker
  • C-CATODSW – Certified Clinical Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Social Worker
  • CSW-G – Clinical Social Worker in Gerontology
  • C-SSWS – Certified School Social work specialist
  • ACHP-SW – Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Social Worker

Education costs

The cost of becoming a social worker involves not only the cost of the degree program and the books associated with the classes but also these additional costs:

  • CSWE and other exams – $230–$260
  • Application fee for LBSW or LMSW – $91
  • Renewal fees every two years – $86–$106

The costs, of course, vary by program. Other factors include residency and brick-and-mortar versus an online social work degree. The cost of education to become a social worker will continue to rise, but the National Center for Education in 2016 estimated it at $15,344.

What if I have a bachelor’s degree and want to make a career change to social work?

It makes more sense to enroll in an MSW program rather than heading back to school to adapt your undergraduate degree and sit for that licensure exam. In Texas, your bachelor’s degree need not fall under the category of social work but only be from an accredited university.

However, you may not sit for the licensure exam at the bachelor’s level without a BSW either from a brick-and-mortar university or an online social work degree in Texas.

You will find the advanced degree well worth your effort if you’re serious about a successful career as a social worker.

Career opportunities in social work and potential income

Throughout the United States, the need for qualified social workers continues to grow. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects available jobs in social work will go up 16% by 2026. The increased requirement for social workers may partly come from the need of the aging baby boomer population.

Texas falls toward the top of state rankings for employing social workers in every discipline, including mental health, healthcare, school social workers, family and child issues, and dealing with substance abuse. Many of these employees received an online social work degree in Texas.

Texas also offers social workers some of the most generous salaries and benefits. Social workers in Texas may be employed with nonprofits, healthcare facilities, and government agencies.

Texas social workers employed with family, child, and school organizations may expect to earn an average of $43,980 annually. Mental health and substance abuse workers make an average of $41,470, and those involved in healthcare earn more than $57,000 a year. Those in specialized documents may average close to $70,000 per year.

Most Texas social workers currently work in child, family, and school social work, with approximately 17,500 employed. Healthcare social workers number around 10,000, substance abuse workers number slightly over 5,000, and specialized workers number about 1,700.

Examples of specific positions available through obtaining an online social work degree in Texas and license include the following:

  • Child, Family, or School Social Worker – The focus for these professionals involves the safety and well-being of children. The social worker assesses a home situation for potential harm and arranges foster care if necessary. This position requires an advanced degree and licensure to practice clinical social work.
  • Medical Social Worker – These social workers typically work in hospitals and other healthcare settings. They help patients with billing, insurance, and other administrative concerns. Minimally, the positions require a BSW, though some employers require an MSW.
  • Substance Abuse Counselor – These individuals may work for a nonprofit, healthcare agency, or government institution. They care for and counsel patients recovering from alcohol or drug abuse. Their credentials typically include an MSW with practicum experience, a state license, and specialty certification.
  • Hospice Social Worker – These social workers care for patients at the end of their lives and provide care and guidance for the family. They assist with decisions regarding palliative care. The position of hospice social worker often requires sensitivity training and critical thinking skills. These social workers hold an MSW and certification in hospice care.
  • Social Service Case Manager – These individuals guide their clients in financial, social, and emotional support matters. Some case manager positions only require a BSW, while those in leadership roles generally need an MSW.

Why opt for an online social work degree program in Texas?

Accredited online social work degrees in Texas maintain the same stringent requirements as brick-and-mortar classrooms and follow the same curriculum. Additionally, an online social work degree in Texas offers the following advantages:

  • Convenience – You’re taking classes in the comfort of your home. Not needing to travel to a classroom especially helps out those students who work and those with family responsibilities.
  • Flexible – Though deadlines exist, most classroom work can be done on the student’s schedule.
  • Affordable – Online credits typically cost less than those in a physical classroom and save on transportation and childcare costs.
  • More interactive – Typically, an online classroom requires participation in the discussion board. You can’t sit in the back of the room and snooze.
  • Technology learning – Familiarity with the technology used in an online social work degree will most likely help students in their future careers.

Though the bulk of the coursework for the online social work degree programs accredited by the Council for Social Work Education may be completed online, practical or board-approved in-person hours remain a requirement for licensure. Those candidates seeking an MSW-AP must complete 3,000 hours for nonclinical work, and for LCSW must complete 3,000 hours for clinical work.

What if I’m a licensed social worker and moving to Texas?

The Texas Board of Social Work does not honor reciprocity agreements with other states. If you’re a licensed social worker with a traditional or online social work degree moving to Texas, you probably won’t need to return to the classroom. However, if you received your license from the Association of Social Work Board, you won’t need to take the Texas exams. If you meet the requirements for the relevant license, you only need to apply. If you received licensure from another board, you must retake your licensure exams.
